No his opening jump is actually a triple toe loop not a triple salchow. The opening jump is toe assisted as can be clearly seen when John spots with his left leg. The triple salchow is the third jump in the programme as you can see John takes off on a left back inside edge with no toe assist and lands on his
 right outside edge.

I have never seen another skater skate within the music like John Curry does, it has
 a seamless quality, the flow in between all of the gorgeous moves...it's funny I never tire of watching John Curry...the end of this program is very cool, always gives me goosebumps!

This is stunning artistically, obviously. One of the greatest of all time. I just have to say it's amazing how quickly the technical standards
 rose after this era. Men only doing triple loops as their hardest jump, and at the Olympics??? This is back when double jumps were still applauded.

The biggest advance ... ( 1 year ago by npe1)
The biggest advance in jump technique came in the 1970's. If you watch some of the older skating
 vids on YT, you'll see that they used to hang their free leg at the side or behind them in jumps. In the '70s we started crossing feet in jumps and that made them tighter and more aero-dynamic and therefore great progress was made. By 1976, Curry and others were crossing feet. The big rise in st
andards actually came in early to mid 70's. In the 60s triple jumps were still pretty rare.

Unlike some of you, i have no technical knowledge, but John was so graceful and yes, Balletic. What a shame he was prevented from doing ballet by his
 father. He would have been great.

I was 9 when I watched it live in 1976 - still recall it
 well. But I had to grow up and appreciate the beauty of dance to really understand the art of this programme. Forget about quads etc etc it's not he complexity that counts - John Curry set a unique standard in even he simplest movement on ice.

I loved how back then skating had a sort of beautiful dance like element; it was more than just technical jumps and spins.
 I just couldn't stop watching :)

Brilliant. He has a lightness so often missing these days. Notice how
 he can spin BOTH ways, equally well? That would take extensive training to be able to do!

I remember my Mum letting me stay up to watch this, the fluidity of John's
 arm movement , with the little flick finishes and the precise and perfect skating will always be remembered.. What an amazing skater and truely amazing man... WOW ... Happy memories for me today ... :0)x

I remember watching Curry's routine live in 1976, and I haven't seen it again till this evening. I wept with joy then;
 and I can't hold back the tears now. What a privilege it is to witness a genius of the ice at the very top of his game. For sheer elegance, grace and technical ability rendered effortless, it will never be surpassed. Flamecapped
Don't say that (" ... ( 8 months ago by boguswoman81)
Don't say that ("there will never
 be another"). Of course, he was great and there will never be another just like him indeed, just because he was he and others are others. But - just as great is still possible. Only that greatness will be of another kind than his. But, by saying this you make it seem like you have decided alread
y beforehand that somoene as great as him is just not possible, thus taking away your own ability to appreciate greatness in other skaters when you see them.
@boguswoman81... ... ( 8 months ago by gooangel2)
@boguswoman81...your perception and mine differ and I do not agree with you. To me there will be no other like him. He was one of a kind and it is that simple. There are other skaters
 I do appreciate, but not on the same level. I do not believe that "as great" or "like him" is possible because now each person has to make their own mark as he made his. None have equaled him yet in my book.
I don't remember ... ( 6 months ago by faeryquene)
I don't remember this at all so I'm quite happy you uploaded it! Thank you! John Curry was magical. It is soooo refreshing not to have to hear Scott Hamilton in the background (thank goodness he was COMPETING in '76 rather than yammering away). Quite a
 boisterous cheering section for John! RIP

Cross-foot spins, one foot axels... moves no one does any longer, too bad. It was wonderful to see John Curry's
 long program from the Olympics. He made it look so effortless, but we all know it wasn't. And how lovely was it to watch it without all the talking over the music. Wish they would go back to that. Thank you for posting this.
I agree with ... ( 1 week ago by mlc2005)
I agree with everything you said about Curry except the "difference school figures made." I have never understood that argument. Curry was simply an amazing talent, and think of all the amazing, brilliant free skaters (like Curry) who were mediocre at figures (Janet Lynn, Toller Cranston, Denise Beillmann, etc). And then some who were fabulous "figures" skaters, aka Trixie Schuba, were horrendous at free skating. Know what I mean?
 But yeah, this program is goose bump inducing!
